WEEK 1 - THE BAUHAUS MOVEMENT

The Bauhaus Movement

During this month's design blogs, I decided to explore different design styles and historical movements, to have an idea of how they influenced the nowadays graphic design and visual arts.

I’m going to describe some of those historical movements; mainly the Bauhaus movement, the Swiss style (or the international Typographic Style), and Post-modernism in graphic design.

I will begin by describing the first movement which is the Bauhaus Movement. The style originated in Germany by the architect Walter Gropius, born in the German empire and then moved to the United States. The philosophy behind the Bauhaus style consists of combining art, craft, and technology.

The main characteristics of the Bauhaus design style are the emphasis on functionality, geometric shapes, and the absence of ornamentation and over-decorative elements.

The Bauhaus school moved from Weimar to Dessau and then to Berlin, adapting to changing political climates and leadership. Key figures such as Mies van der Rohe and Paul Klee contributed to its flourishing. Despite its end in 1933 due to the Nazi regime's opposition, the Bauhaus Movement profoundly influenced modern architecture, art, and design, promoting a legacy of simplicity, functionality, and a holistic approach to creativity.
